About

Who Is AUGS?

The American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS) is the non-profit organization representing professionals dedicated to treating female pelvic floor disorders. Founded in 1979, AUGS represents more than 2,000 members, including practicing physicians, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, nurses and health care professionals, and researchers from many disciplines. AUGS is the trusted voice and primary source of clinical and scientific information and education for the urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery subspecialty.

What Are Pelvic Floor Disorders?

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues that form the base of the pelvis. It supports key organs, including the bladder, bowel, uterus, vagina, and rectum, helping to keep them in place and functioning properly. When the pelvic floor becomes weakened or damaged, often due to stretched muscles or injured connective tissue, it can no longer provide the support these organs need. As a result, women may experience symptoms that affect their ability to control pee and poop, sexual function, and perform daily activities, significantly impacting their quality of life.

What is “It’s Common, Not Normal”?

About 1 in 4 women (nearly 24%) over the age of 20 experience a pelvic floor disorder, according to research from the NIH and Mayo Clinic—but only 4% are actively diagnosed and receiving specialized care. It’s Common, Not Normal is AUGS’ commitment to end the silence among women who struggle with pelvic health issues, helping them get access to clinically backed information and resources for every stage of their health journey.

WomensPelvicHealth.org is AUGS’ trusted, evidence-based resource designed to help women better understand pelvic floor disorders and take the next step toward care. This site offers unbiased, medically sound information on common pelvic health conditions, symptoms, and treatment options, while helping you identify the most appropriate health care provider based on your needs. In addition to educational resources, women can access advocacy organizations and connect with a broader community of women facing similar challenges. This is where you come to feel empowered about your pelvic health.
